DESCRIPTION:The general problem of determining necessary and sufficient co
 nditions for a matrix A to be diagonally stable is currently unsolved\, an
 d there is a great deal of research in progress in this area. A recent\nre
 sult due to Shorten and Narendra\, which expresses the condition of Redhef
 fer in a convenient form\, makes the problem considerably more tractable. 
 In this lecture\, using this result\, some of the difficult\nquestions tha
 t arise in the general problem are examined.\n\n
