DESCRIPTION:There has been a tendency in some circles to suggest that summ
ative assessment actually damages learning. What is meant by this? And wha
t are the arguments of groups which champion greater reliance on ‘Assess
ment for Learning’? Is it possible to say that some assessment regimes s
upport learning better than others? And if that is so\, is it mainly a mat
ter of getting summative assessment over and done with as quickly and pain
lessly as possible? Or is there more to say about the positive effect of e
xaminations and external assessments on learning?
