DESCRIPTION:In 2023 at RSECon I joined in with the Carpentries Offline hac
k workshop – we aim to provide resources for teaching Carpentries lesso
n content without internet access\, especially important in making these a
ccessible to learners and teachers in low and middle income countries. Thi
s includes teaching HPC (without an HPC): we aimed to develop a mini HPC c
luster to demonstrate concepts to learners without access to a full-scale
cluster.\n\nGiven the challenges of connecting to and administering the si
ngle-board computing devices that we were using to develop this\, in envir
onments where WiFi and internet access may be limited\, I began a project
to create a KVM “crash cart” adapter at a fraction of the cost\, using
easily available parts found at a low cost online.\n\nThis talk discusses
the process of creating that tool\, the hardware and software\, and some
of the lessons learned along the way.
