DESCRIPTION:Toric varieties are a rich example of algebraic varieties and 
 are the local model for "smooth logarithmic spaces"\, which in recent year
 s have been extremely powerful for studying moduli spaces and enumerative 
 problems. We give an introduction to toric varieties\, with a view towards
  applications to tropical correspondence theorems. No background in toric 
 varieties is required.
