DESCRIPTION:The Helium Spin Echo (HeSE) experiment offers a compelling exa
mple of an open quantum system\, where interactions between a quantum part
icle and its environment are essential to understanding observed behaviour
. In this talk\, we use the HeSE setup to introduce the key concepts and t
erminology of open quantum systems\, contrasting them with the conventiona
l semiclassical interpretation. We then apply this framework to the dynami
cs of hydrogen adsorbates on surfaces during spin echo measurements. Using
the Caldeira–Leggett model\, we examine what can meaningfully be said a
bout the quantum state of an adsorbed atom before\, during\, and after a s
 cattering event.
