DESCRIPTION:Sir Fred Hoyle (1915 - 2001) made outstanding contributions to
our understanding of how the Universe works. His finest contribution was
his work on the origin of the chemical elements\, which are made in stars
and released in supernova explosions. In the 1950s he famously argued with
the radio astronomers in Cambridge about the origin of the Universe. Hoyl
e rejected the Big Bang theory\, and thus courted controversy. In this tal
k\, Dr Simon Mitton will highlight Hoyle's work in astrophysics\, astrobio
logy\, science fiction\, and the popularisation of science. \n\n
