DESCRIPTION:Between the epochs of inflation and nucleosynthesis — a peri
od lasting approximately half the lifetime of the universe on a logarithmi
c scale — the universe is almost entirely unconstrained. Not only may th
e equation of state be very different from that of the Standard Cosmology\
, the vacuum configuration may be far from our current vacuum. I describe
the string theory motivation and physics for a rolling modulus epoch here\
, and explain how this can lead to an attractor solution in which 75% of t
he energy density lies in the form of loops of fundamental strings. I brie
fly discuss possible observational signatures of this epoch from relic gra
 vitational waves.\n
