DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence/Machine learning (AI/ML)\, especially
deep learning\, is becoming increasingly popular. Many also believe they a
re having/will have transformational impacts on many scientific fields. Bu
t important questions remain\, such as:\n- Are these methods really that d
ifferent from traditional statistical approaches?\n- How\, exactly\, do th
ey even work?\n- Why\, in particular\, should we even expect them to work?
\n- And\, most importantly: what will it take to believe them when they ma
ke novel discoveries?\nI'll try to lead discussion on some of these questi
ons\, highlight some of the practical and philosophical areas they interse
ct with\, and aim to provide some answers/perspectives on some of them (as
  time permits).
