DESCRIPTION:followed by a wine reception\n\nMany discoveries in biology ar
e made first in plants. Only very recently\, a class of small regulatory R
NA strands common to many eucaryotes\, the siRNA\, was found. Some of thes
e diverse RNA fragments are negative regulators of gene expression whereas
others participate in more complex regulatory effects -- or even as part
of an RNA signal that moves between cells.\n\nIn his SciSoc Lecture\, Sir
David Baulcombe\, the co-discoverer of this much talked about RNA variety\
, will describe how siRNA was discovered\, it's impact on the diagnosis an
d treatment of disease\, and the role it plays in improving crop plants.\n
