SUMMARY:The origin and behaviour of deep ocean clay crusts (Subtitle: ...w
hen biology meets engineering...) - Matthew Kuo (University of Cambridge)

DESCRIPTION:This talk will describe the phenomenon of deep sea soft clay \
ncrusts found off the west coast of Africa and the possible implications \
nof its presence to hot-oil pipeline design. A discussion of the \npossibl
e hypotheses for the crust's origin will be followed by the \npresentation
of some surprising results from Cam-shear testing on \npipeline coating i
nterfaces. Evidence for biological activity within \nthe crust in the form
of burrowing invertebrates (worms) is presented \nwith a focus on the mec
hanical behaviour of worm faecal pellets \nextracted from deep ocean cores
