SUMMARY:Nanodomains in Ferroelectrics and Magnetoelectrics - J. F. Scott\,

DESCRIPTION:I will present a review of recent theory and experiment concer
ning nanodomains. For many years domains in ferroelectrics were thought t
o be rectilinear\, with for example\, 180 and 90 degree domains in tetrago
nal crystals\, 109 and 71 degree domains in rhombohedral crystals. Recent
ly\, however\, experiments have revealed circular closure or vortex domain
s and toroidal domains (see attached figure). A brief history\, starting
with Ginzburg in 1984 and concluding with work this month by Igor Lukyanch
uk (Amiens) and the present author will be given.
