DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we can give a general criterion for the automor
 phism group of nonelementary hyperbolic groups to be linear in terms of ce
 rtain epimorphisms from the hyperbolic group to finite products of finite 
 simple groups of Lie type. Potential applications include the question of 
 nonlinearity of mapping class groups.
