DESCRIPTION:Mathematics\, from its earliest days\, has always benefited fr
om the healthy tension between theory and application. But who or what def
ines the particular areas for exploration\, as well as the mathematical to
olbox\, of practising applied mathematicians? Should applied mathematician
s seek elegance and truth in the order of the universe\, or be happy to wo
rk on ‘dirty problems’?\n\nIn this highly selective and somewhat opini
onated talk\, I shall offer a few thoughts and observations about the chan
ging nature of applied mathematics from the nineteenth century to the pres
ent day. This will be discussed in the context of significant developments
within society\; the expansion of universities and the subjects studied t
herein\; and changes to industry\, commerce and technology.\n\nUnfortunate
ly\, there will not be time to illustrate or motivate this talk with speci
fic examples of major research advances\; however\, I hope that the talk w
ill stimulate others to consider how we keep mathematics relevant and impa
ctful and whether the subject divisions within mathematics are now becomin
g obsolete.\n\n* This talk is adapted from the Institute of Mathematics an
d Its Applications’ Gold Medal Lecture given in June 2025.\n
