SUMMARY:The Antarctic Ozone Hole: Then and Now - Speaker to be confirmed

DESCRIPTION:The discovery of the Antarctic Ozone Hole led to intensive res
earch to find out why such large ozone\nlosses were occurring in a region
which was previously thought to be chemically inactive. This\nresearch inv
olved both atmospheric chemistry and meteorology and so it is entirely fit
ting that the\nroyal societies of the two disciplines are supporting this
workshop. The finding also led to the\nMontreal Protocol which limited ozo
ne-depleting gases and so to close involvement of atmospheric\nscientists
with the chemical industry and the political process. Thus\, while the foc
us is on the\natmospheric science\, talks will cover the industrial and po
litical developments. The presentations will\nbe given by leading internat
ional speakers and will cover the scientific and political importance of t
he\ndiscovery of the Antarctic Ozone Hole\, as well as the latest developm
 ents.\n\nSpeakers include\nPaul Crutzen\, Nobel Prize winner\nDavid Fahey\
 , NOAA\nMichael McIntyre\, University of Cambridge\nJean-Pierre Pommereau\
 , CNRS\nJohn Pyle\, UNEP/WMO co-chair & University of Cambridge\nJonathan
 Shanklin\, BAS\nKeith Shine\, University of Reading\nSusan Solomon\, NOAA\
