DESCRIPTION:In his talk he will use the notion of community as an interpre
 tive lens to address the role that comprehensive secondary education is pl
 aying as a mechanism for expanding democracy under conditions of globaliza
 tion. The talk will explore three challenges currently facing secondary ed
 ucation: who should the high school serve\; what programs should the high 
 school offer\; and the purpose of the high school. While his focus will be
  on the United States\, he will make reference to the struggle for compreh
 ensive education in Britain and where the current academies movement and o
 ther privatization schemes fit in.
