DESCRIPTION:We study the Burgers equation featuring an additional term gov
 erned by a positively 1-homogeneous potential. This problem is motivated b
 y the so-called Hibler's sea ice model. It treats sea ice as a non-Newtoni
 an fluid\, where the stress tensor includes such a term in order to accoun
 t for the plastic response of the ice.\nFor this simplified one-dimensiona
 l model we introduce a suitable notion of solution in the framework of BV-
 solutions. Starting in the regularized setting of a viscoplastic Burgers e
 quation\, we study the existence of such generalized solutions. We investi
 gate the passage to the plastic limit and further discuss the properties o
 f the solutions.\nThis is joint work with  Xin Liu (Texas A&M University)
