DESCRIPTION:*Abstract:* Byzantine Fault/Intrusion Tolerance has become a r
eference paradigm for dealing with faults and intrusions\, achieving secur
ity (and dependability) in an automatic way\, much along the lines of clas
sical fault tolerance. However\, there are issues specific to malicious fa
ults (attacks and intrusions) that bring about some problems and limitatio
ns to the paradigm as a basis for designing resilient systems\, some of wh
ich quite unexpected. We wish to discuss the limitations of some theoretic
al underpinnings of Byzantine Fault/Intrusion Tolerance in distributed sys
tems\, and report on some research results evaluating some of those limita
 tions.
