DESCRIPTION:Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) maintenance relies on mechanisms tha
t control both the amount and the integrity of the genome. We identify fac
tors and principles that underlie mtDNA homeostasis and investigate how th
ey contribute to copy number regulation and quality control. Using S. cere
visiae as a model\, we apply genetic approaches and quantitative imaging t
o dissect these processes across different levels of organization\, from m
olecular interactions to cellular outcomes. Recent work has revealed pathw
ays that determine mtDNA abundance\, as well as mechanisms that promote th
e preferential maintenance of functional genomes over defective ones. Toge
ther\, these findings provide a framework for understanding how eukaryotic
cells maintain an adequate and functional mitochondrial genome population
