SUMMARY:Parametric deformation arguments in spectral geometry - Josef Grei
 lhuber (Stanford University)

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we will explore three seemingly disparate quest
ions: Do there exist sets on which a nonzero\, but finite number of linear
ly independent harmonic functions can vanish? Are the nodal patterns that
arise in Chladni&rsquo\;s famous clamped plated experiment &ldquo\;dense&r
dquo\; at the scale of their characteristic wave-length? Is the spectrum o
f the curl operator on a smoothly bounded domain generically simple? One m
ay shed light on all three of these questions by considering parametric de
formations of certain underlying spectral problems. Part of this talk is j
oint work with Alberto Enciso and Willi Kepplinger (ICMAT\, Madrid).
