DESCRIPTION:Simulating quantum systems is computationally expensive largel
y because of the amount of “state” that must be propagated. Classical
diffusion can be described efficiently by just two variables\, x and p\, w
hereas quantum state diffusion requires tracking a wavefunction with hundr
eds of complex degrees of freedom. This becomes especially challenging whe
n studying long-timescale behavior\, where the wavefunction must be large
enough to represent the system across its entire configuration space.\n\nI
n this talk\, I will present a new approach to simulating quantum diffusio
n which makes use of a dynamic basis to greatly reduce the amount of state
we must propagate. I show that with this approach we need only a single c
omplex variable to describe the state of an open harmonic system.
