DESCRIPTION:How should museums preserve and display our computing history
and culture? The interpretation of computing raises a number of issues: mo
re than any other technology\, computers impact on all our lives\, though
few of us really understand how they actually work\; museums have traditio
nally dealt with material culture\, but increasingly computers are about e
phemeral applications\, software and data\; computers are the ultimate gen
eral purpose machine\, but it’s their ‘congealed social relations’ t
hat really brings them to life to audiences. This talk will unpack some of
issues surrounding the conservation and interpretation of computing at th
 e Science Museum\, London.
