DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this talk\, I will survey what is known about
  asymptotic representations of higher-rank lattices (such as SL_2(Z[1/2]))
 .\nWe interpret the term "asymptotic representation" quite boradly and uni
 fy several lines of research under the two following key questions:\n1) Is
  every asymptotic representation close to a true representation? (some kin
 d of stability)&nbsp\;\n2) Does there exist a higher-rank lattice which do
 es not admit an approximation by asymptotic representations?\nWe will pres
 ent few answers\, and many directions for future research. In particular\,
  we argue that the higher-rank setting is the leading candidate for non-so
 fic\, non-hyperlinear and non-MF groups.\nAll terms will be explained in t
 he talk\, based on joint work with Benjamin Bachner and Alex Lubotzky and 
 joint work with Itamar Vigdorovich.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n\n\n
