DESCRIPTION:Trial-by-trial variations in brain activity modulate the respo
nse of the brain to external stimulation and can predict fluctuations in c
onscious awareness. I will present a series of experiments in which we sho
w how fluctuations in conscious awareness arise from the global pre-stimul
us state of the brain in different experimental paradigms (multi-stable pe
rception\, perceptual awareness at the visual threshold). \nGiven the intr
icate link between brain and body\, I take this paradigm a step further an
d show how cyclic variations in bodily signals across the cardiac and resp
iratory phase and the mode of breathing can likewise modulate awareness-re
lated brain activity and so contribute to awareness. \n\nHost: Prof Nicky
Clayton \n\nThis talk will be recorded and uploaded to the Zangwill Club "
 Youtube channel":https://https://www.youtube.com/@zangwill_club in due cou
 rse.
