DESCRIPTION:The Discovery Investigations were a series of cruises commissi
oned by the Royal Society over the period 1925-1951. Originally with the a
im of investigating whale stocks and their feeding grounds the cruises con
stituted some of the earliest comprehensive scientific work in the Souther
n Ocean. The investigations totalled thousands of stations involving coord
inated sampling that contributed enormously to our understanding\, describ
ing the Antarctic convergence and the importance of krill as food for whal
es. Despite their significance most of the original ecological data used i
n the synthesis of the Discovery Reports is not available to the scientifi
c community with much of the collections having become separated and dispa
rate over the past decades. As a result this unique data is missing from a
ny detailed comparisons between historic and modern ecological Southern Oc
ean analysis. \nIn collaboration with the Natural History Museum and the N
ational Oceanography Centre\, BAS are addressing this through two main obj
ectives: (1) the production of a free single web based data portal\, prov
iding the user with access to original raw data rescued from the archived
collections\; and (2) illustrate the value of the historic raw data by usi
ng it to help answer important questions about Southern Ocean plankton eco
logy. \nThis talk will explain the problems faced and how they are being o
vercome\, along with a look at the potential scientific questions we hope
to help answer through this project.\n
