DESCRIPTION:Sports decision aids such as Hawk-Eye appear to be able to mak
e clear judgements beyond the capability of any human umpire. This is ofte
n an illusion. The business of the introduction of technological aids for
match officiating will be examined from first principles and it will be ar
gued that justice can only be served if such aids always operate with a zo
ne of uncertainty. Information about the technical capacity of a variety o
f such aids will be provided.
