DESCRIPTION:Binary black holes (BHBs) embedded in dense gas hold the\nprom
 ise of so-called "multi-messenger astrophysics": when they are\ndetected b
oth through gravitational waves (GWs) and electromagnetic\n(EM) observatio
ns\, they will enable novel science. This is true both\nfor massive BHBs\
, whose GWs will be detectable by the future LISA\nsatellite and by on-goi
ng pulsar timing arrays (PTAs)\, as well as for\nstellar-mass BHBs detecte
d through ground-based GW detectors. In both\ncases\, identifying the coa
lescing binaries through their EM signatures\nwill help clarify their astr
ophysical origin and yield novel probes of\ncosmology\, fundamental physic
s\, and accretion physics. In this talk\,\nI will describe how circumbina
ry gas may produce characteristic EM\nsignatures for both massive and stel
lar-mass BHBs\, based on analytic\nmodels as well as hydrodynamical simula
tions. I will also argue that\nin both cases\, some coalescing binaries m
ay have already been detected\nin optical surveys\, providing clues about
 their origin.\n
