DESCRIPTION:Traffic noise due to tyres rolling on road surfaces is a signi
ficant cause of irritation and distress. It arises from tyre vibrations ca
used by the impact of tread elements on road asperities. This process is d
ifficult to model\, demanding as it does time-domain simulations of a rand
om contact process. Hence it is desirable to simplify individual component
s\; the tyre belt\, for example\, is often represented as a thin plate. Th
e talk is concerned with the viability of this approximation. We consider
waves propagating on an infinite plate with composition typical of a tyre
belt. This case admits exact solutions for the freely propagating waves th
at can be sustained. On the basis of their dispersion relations\, we asses
s the applicability of thin-plate theories\, and also approximate thicknes
s-resolving calculations\, to tyre vibration modelling.
