DESCRIPTION:* _A_ "*video*":http://sms.cam.ac.uk/media/871489 _of the talk
is now available._\n\nThe problem of how life came into existence remains
a major challenge in biology. In this lecture I shall develop an explana
tion for the existence of ordinary life based upon the hypothesis that a f
orm of life\, not dependent on matter\, existed prior to the big bang\, ev
olving ideas and their applications in a similar way to the way that human
societies do. Universes\, and the kind of life with which we are familia
r\, are viewed as outcomes of that technology. This hypothesised extended
mentality may clarify a number of other issues\, for example the role of
the observer in quantum mechanics\, and human capacities that are hard to
account for purely in terms of brain functioning.
