DESCRIPTION:Why is there so much political polarization in many advanced d
emocracies? This lecture discusses two mechanisms. On the demand side\, v
oters’ extremism is boosted by the mere salience of group conflict. On t
he supply side\, Twitter messages sent by political leaders become more po
larized before and during the elections. Overall\, these results suggest t
hat political polarization reflects the interaction of the demand and supp
ly sides of politics\, and that elections strengthen the incentives of pol
 iticians to polarize their voters.
