DESCRIPTION:String and M-Theory provides a remarkable framework in which b
oth particle physics and gravity appear in quantum mechanical and mathemat
ically consistent way\, albeit  in ten and eleven dimensions respectively
. Although they don’t currently lead to compelling experimental predicti
ons they do have rich implications for Mathematics and Physics in a variet
y of other settings. In this talk I will discuss what motivates String The
ory and  M-theory\, the role of extended objects known as branes\,  and
how this leads to novel\, non-gravitational\, quantum theories in three an
 d six dimensions.
