DESCRIPTION:Double parton scattering (DPS) - the process in which two dist
inct pairs of partons hard scatter in an individual proton-proton collisio
n - represents an important background to certain Higgs and new physics si
gnals\, and reveals information about the internal structure of the proton
. One of the key objects required to make theoretical predictions of DPS c
ross sections is the set of double parton distribution functions (dPDFs) -
the two parton analogue of the well-established set of single PDFs. Tradi
tionally the dPDFs have been crudely approximated using products of single
PDFs\, neglecting all possible correlations in longitudinal momentum. I d
iscuss a novel set of dPDFs - the GS09 dPDFs - which takes proper account
of pQCD evolution effects\, and also obeys the constraints imposed on the
dPDFs by quark number and momentum conservation considerations.
