DESCRIPTION:We study barrier crossing processes for active particles. Usin
g a low-noise Kramers limit we derive the effective activation barriers fo
r three standard descriptions: active Brownian (ABP)\, active Ornstein-Uhl
enbeck (AOUP) and run-and-tumble particles. We find that\, because barrier
crossing is dominated by rare fluctuations\, there are significant qualit
ative differences between these. For ABPs one key result is that\, for pot
entials with a symmetry axis\, activity can generate optimal escape paths
that break this symmetry. Time permitting\, extensions to barrier crossing
in configuration space\, i.e. cage breaking in active glasses\, will be d
iscussed with a focus on AOUPs.
