DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines how heritage has been mobilised\, c
ontested\, and weaponised during the most recent\nyears of the Venezuelan
crisis. Through two case studies\, it analyses heritage as a staging groun
 d for political\nnegotiation\, resistance\, and violence. First\, it explo
res the toppling of statues of Hugo Chávez following the 2024\npresidenti
al election\, arguing that beyond political dissent these acts engaged wit
h widespread beliefs in the statues’\n‘magical’ potency rooted in Af
 ro-Indigenous religious traditions. Second\, it investigates the 2025 U.S.
bombing\ncampaign in the Southern Caribbean\, demonstrating how competing
representations of fishermen as either\n‘narcoterrorists’ or ‘humbl
e fishermen’ were manipulated to legitimise military intervention. Toget
her\, these cases\nshow how heritage has played an important role during t
he latest developments of the Venezuelan crisis and opens\navenues for nua
nced approaches to even more recent (2026) developments in the country.\n\
