DESCRIPTION:Human development has long been intertwined with the developme
nt of materials — from the Stone\, Bronze\, and Iron Ages to the current
Anthropocene\, where the well-being of more than eight billion people and
the sustainability of our development model have become existential chall
enges. Firmly at the core of the human footprint\, materials enable the te
chnologies that power our economy and support — or fail to support — o
ur society. Computing\, and more recently AI\, have entered the fray as ad
ditional accelerators of our scientific and technological pipeline. I will
try to provide an overview of what is possible\, why it matters\, and wha
t we should do more of. \n\nTalks are priced at £4 for non-Scientific Soc
iety members. Scientific Society members will have free access to all our
talks. Lifetime membership costs £15 and gives free access to all talks\,
members-only events and priority access to oversubscribed SciSoc events.
