DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe story of the redevelopment of London’s Isle
of Dogs is one that has only partially\nbeen told. Most academic interest
ceased following the property crash of the early 1990s when\nthe demise of
Olympia & York seemed to bear out many contemporary critiques. Yet the ma
rket\nbounced back\, and so did Canary Wharf. The presentation will ask: W
hat forms of planning have\nwe seen on the Island\; what role has design p
layed in these\; what outcomes have resulted from\nthese processes\; and a
s a result\, have we yet seen an urban renaissance?\n\nBiography:\nMatthew
Carmona is Professor of Planning & Urban Design and Head of the Bartlett
School of Planning\, UCL.\nHis research has focused on the policy context
for delivering better quality built environments. His background is as an\
narchitect and a planner and he has published widely in the areas of urban
  design\, design policy and guidance\, housing\ndesign and development\, m
easuring quality and performance in planning\, and on the management of pu
 blic space.
