DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe premise is that there is no one single best ap
proach to achieving green design\, but a\nnumber of ways to arrive at the
same goal. The presentation presents five propositions. The first\nproposi
tion regards green design as designing to weave four ecoinfrastructures: t
 he ‘grey’\, ‘blue’\, ‘green’\nand ‘red’ into a system. The
second regards green design as the seamless and benign biointegration of\
nthe artificial (human made) with the natural at three levels: physically\
, systemically and temporally. The\nthird proposition regards green design
as ecomimesis: designing the human built environment as an\nartificial ec
osystem that mimics natural ecosystem: their structure\, functions\, proce
sses\, features and\ntheir development. The fourth approach to ecodesign i
s one of the restoring of existent devastated\nnatural environments and th
e rehabilitation of our existing built environments and cities. The fifth\
nproposition is where ecodesign is regarded as the monitoring of ecosystem
s and built systems in the\nbiosphere and the subsequent rectifying of any
environmental imbalances and coordinated sets of\nenvironmental interacti
ons. A theoretical model for green design is presented together with the a
ttendant\ntechnical and design issues. The above propositions are illustra
ted by a series of design examples.\nOther unresolved areas of green desig
n are also discussed.\n\nBiography: \nKen Yeang (Dr.) is an architect-plan
ner\, ecologist and author who is best known for his signature and\ninnova
tive green buildings and masterplans. He is regarded as one of the foremos
t designers and noted authority on\necologically- responsive architecture
and planning. He has authored several books on ecological design and tall
building\ndesign\, one jointly authored with Professor Ivor Richards (part
ner of Sir Leslie Martin). He has received numerous awards\nfor his work a
nd designs. His key built works include the Menara Mesiniaga (IBM) Tower (
Malaysia)\, the National Library\n(Singapore) Great Ormond Street Hospital
Extension (UK). He is an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Arc
hitects\nand has served on the Royal Institute of Architects Council. He i
s the distinguished Plym Professor at the University of\nIllinois\, and Ad
junct Professors at Tongji University (Shanghai) and University of Malaya.
He is Chairman of the UK\narchitect and planning firm\, Llewelyn Davies Y
eang and principal of its sister company\, Hamzah & Yeang (Malaysia). He\n
received his doctorate in architecture from Cambridge University (Wolfson
College). His dissertation is entitled\, ʻA\ntheoretical framework for th
e Incorporation of ecological considerations in the design and planning of
  the built environment.
