DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This seminar will examine four case studies that sho
w the innovative ways in which\ncontemporary architects throughout Latin A
merican are responding to the challenge of building\nfor the poor. The ana
lysis of these four cases also highlights a significant shift in governmen
tal\npolicy. Instead of the large relocation schemes that were common in t
he 1960s\, 70s and 80s\,\ntoday there is an increasing tendency to tackle
social housing via small-scale projects directed to\nspecific communities.
Small-scale projects help to reduce the cost of investment\, shorten\ncon
struction times\, minimize effect on the rest of the city and\, more impor
tantly\, allow architects\nto address the needs of particular groups.\n\nB
