DESCRIPTION:The paper offers a preliminary outline of the grain milling in
dustry in England between 1540 and 1800\, drawing on a sample of 1050 mill
s that were involved in Exchequer litigation between 1550 and 1770\, suppl
emented by other material. It argues that there were broad continuities in
the milling industry down to 1650\, but thereafter structural change in t
he economy\, accompanied by changes in market practices and distribution\,
supported and prompted new approaches to the business of milling. These c
hanges prepared the way for more rapid technological change in the ninetee
nth century after a very long period of 'conservative innovation’.\nhttp
