DESCRIPTION:This paper traces the long-term financial trajectory of Ottoma
n pious foundations using a newly compiled dataset of 1\,300 accounting re
gisters from sixty foundations across the Balkans\, Anatolia\, the Levant\
, and Egypt (1575–1800). It provides the first systematic quantitative a
nalysis based on a comprehensive empire-wide dataset. We examine how the f
inances of foundations—major holders of urban and rural assets and among
the principal revenue claimants of the empire—evolved within broader pr
ocesses of state-building and economic change. We show that although the f
inancial and operational capacity of foundations diminished over time\, mo
st remained resilient until late eighteenth-century fiscal instability tri
 ggered marked decline.\nhttps://cam-ac-uk.zoom.us/j/87528851922?pwd=ai1om0
