DESCRIPTION:In this talk some of the principles thought to govern the sens
ing of the misfolded/unfolded protein load in the ER and the transcription
al and translational response to that load (referred to collectively as th
e unfolded protein response or UPR) will be described. This focus on the p
hysiology of the system will aim to justify the interest in manipulating i
t to therapeutic ends. Towards the close of the talk\, an example of nasce
nt attempts to manipulate the UPR will be discussed.
