DESCRIPTION:On the rare occasions when scholars mention the Annals of Clon
macnoise they are simply described as an early modern translation (into En
glish) of a now lost Irish annalistic text and then promptly ignored. Thi
s is in marked contrast to the attention paid to that other famous (and al
most exactly contemporary) compilation of seventeenth-century Irish annals
\, the Annals of the Four Masters. Despite languishing in obscurity since
the publication of Denis Murphy’s poor edition in 1896\, the Annals of
Clonmacnoise ought to be of interest to both medievalists and early modern
ists (if such separation can/should be made). While the Annals of Clonmac
noise may be viewed as part of the medieval Irish annalistic tradition\, t
heir early seventeenth-century compiler\, Conall Mag Eochagáin\, also inc
orporated a substantial amount of extra-annalistic material into his text
and engaged with some of the political and historiographic controversies o
f his own\, highly turbulent time. In this seminar I hope to explore the
sources used by Mag Eochagáin\, as I slowly plod towards producing a new
 edition.
