DESCRIPTION:This talk will focus on new developments in nanoparticle-based
plasmonics. Metal nanoparticles are physically realizable classical oscil
lator systems at the nanoscale. Knowing how to clever couple masses on spr
ings thus allows us to create ultrasmall optical cavities with desired rad
iative properties\, from sub- to superradiance and the emergence of Fano r
esonances. The fundamental physics of these processes will be addressed\,
as will be\nimportant examples of applications\, ranging from optical sens
ing to control over nanoscale light emitters. Additionally\, a brief overv
iew of other\nactivities within the nanoplasmonics group at Imperial Colle
 ge will be provided.
