DESCRIPTION:Liquid crystals are materials that have properties\, like\nthe
ability to flow\, normally associated with fluids and\nothers\, like opti
cal birefringence\, normally associated\nwith crystalline solids. They ha
ve symmetries that fill\nthe gap between the full rotational and translati
onal\ninvariance of homogeneous and isotropic fluids and the\nperiodic str
ucture of crystals. This talk will review the\nmenagerie of liquid crysta
lline phases. It will then\ndiscuss\, using examples from liquid crystals
 \, those\nproperties of any condensed system - long-wave-length\nelasticit
y\, hydrodynamics\, and topological defect structure\n- that can be determ
 ined from symmetry alone.\n
