DESCRIPTION:This talk will discuss the benefits of modelling and analysing
  soil at the scale of individual particles from the perspective of geotech
 nical engineering.  The presentation will be given in two parts: Catherine
  O'Sullivan will give an introduction to discrete element modelling\, a te
 chnique for simulating systems of interacting particles\, then Joana Fonse
 ca will introduce microcomputed tomography as a tool to characterise soil 
 at the particle scale.
