DESCRIPTION:The world's ice-covered areas are undergoing a period of somew
hat rapid change. This has led to a new series of challenges in predicting
future ice levels and their effect on global climate\, and also to a new
series of opportunities for the hydrocarbon and marine industries. A numbe
r of current scientific and technical problems thus rely on an understandi
ng of the behaviour of ice. Dr Lishman will discuss these scientific and t
echnical problems within their political context\, and give an introductio
n to the physical behaviour of ice at the poles. He will also discuss his
own work on ice friction\, and its varied applications.
