DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear about the European Satellite Navigation Compet
ition (ESNC)\, an international competition open to anybody with an idea w
hich involves the use of satellite navigation technologies\, with guest sp
eakers discussing their role in this area.\n\nThe European Satellite Navig
ation Competition (ESNC) 2010 has a deadline of 31 July 2010 for businesse
s to enter\, with a first prize of £10\,000 going to the overall winner p
lus numerous other prizes to be won. Join us at this Cambridge Network Ope
n Meeting to find out more about this exciting competition and what it cou
ld mean for Cambridge companies\, and to hear inspiring guest speakers fro
m the Satcoms arena.\n \nWe all use satellite communications everyday\, pe
rhaps without realising it. Satellites for navigation\, positioning\, comm
’s etc are increasingly important for all aspects of business\, with inn
ovative technology critically important for next steps. By 2011 there will
be a European satellite system launched to replicate the US GPS system we
presently use. In support of this\, the EU runs this annual business comp
etition: the European Satellite Navigation Competition - see the ESNC web
site for full information. \n \nCambridge Network has arranged an Open Mee
ting on 20 May at Robinson College to explore the business and technology
aspects of Space and Satellite Communications. We are delighted to have sp
eaking: \n\n- Clive de la Fuente\, from GRACE\, who will be presenting an
outline of the ESNC and explaining how Cambridge companies can participate
 . \n \n- Richard Peckham\, Business Development Director\, EADS Astrium di
scussing the Space Innovation and Growth Team (Space IGT). Space IGT is a
collaboration between Government and the UK space industry and in February
this year published its 20-year Innovation and Growth Strategy. The strat
egy sets out a clear vision for the UK to grow its share of the global spa
ce market from 6 to 10 per cent\, creating a domestic industry worth £40
billion a year in revenue and supporting 100\,000 new jobs by 2025. \n\n-
Andrew Mackenzie\, Principal at Scott & York\, one of the leading patent a
nd trade mark attorneys\, talking on the importance of protecting IP in th
is field. Andrew specialises in patent-related matters and has acted for m
any of the biggest names in the telecommunications\, software\, and electr
onics industries (companies such as Microsoft\, Nortel\, Ericsson\, Vodafo
 ne\, Alcatel\, Qualcomm\, The BBC\, Northrop Grumman\, NeXt Computer and S
cientific Atlanta). \n\nThe Q&A after\, chaired by Hugh Parnell\, will st
imulate discussion of how Cambridge technology is and can increasingly del
iver commercial success in the satcoms arena.\n \nPlease join us for an in
teresting evening of talks and discussion\, and hopefully we can ensure th
ere is a Cambridge winner of the European Satellite Navigation Competition
2010!\n\nThis event is FREE to all members of the University of Cambridge
