nities of the $500 genome' - David Bentley\, Chief Scientist\, Illumina

DESCRIPTION:Personalised medicine promises better outcomes for patients as
biomarkers can identify groups with better responses to drugs or other tr
eatments but also raises some technical and ethical challenges. Illumina h
as over 60% world market share for personalised genome sequencing and the
European Bioinformatics Institute has been leading European researchers in
mapping the genome and sharing information. In this talk they will explor
e the implications of $500 personalised genome testing for implications fo
r patients\, healthcare providers and technologists.\n\nSpeakers will incl
ude:\n\nDavid Bentley (Chief Scientist of Illumina) pictured\nDavid will b
e speaking about their push to take the cost of a personal genome down to
$500 and the early applications of their service for patient care. \n\nPau
l Flicek (Head of Vertebrate Genomics\, European Bioinformatics Institute)
\nPaul will talk about the challenges of software and data handling for th
e very large volumes of sensitive data that will be produced as personalis
ed genome sequencing becomes more widespread.\n\nThe Healthcare SIG aims t
o provide a platform where mainstream technology members of the Cambridge
Network can interact with those companies focused more specifically on hea
lthcare issues\, for the benefit of both. \n\nThe venue for this meeting i
s Mills and Reeve's office at 112 Hills Road and the evening will start wi
th registration at 6pm. \n\nAll members of the University of Cambridge may
attend free of charge\, but we do like you to register\, which you can do
  via our website at: http://www.cambridgenetwork.co.uk/events/article/defa
