DESCRIPTION:The development of new medicines for serious human diseases pr
 omises to revolutionize treatment. However\, the recent election campaign 
 has highlighted the stark gap between our increasing expectations and the 
 difficulty in funding the ever-growing cost of healthcare. Why is it so di
 fficult and expensive to develop new medicines against diseases like cance
 r? What is the likely impact of these problems on healthcare in developed 
 and developing economies? I will examine some of the scientific and socioe
 conomic challenges facing efforts to develop safe\, effective and affordab
 le new medicines for major diseases.
