DESCRIPTION:I aim to offer a gentle introduction to Hecke algebras and Kaz
 hdan-Lusztig polynomials. I will define from scratch prerequisite concepts
  such as Coxeter and Weyl groups and (crystallographic) root systems\, bef
 ore introducing Hecke algebras and the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis and providing
  some background information. The focus of the talk will then shift to mat
 ters concerning the explicit computation of the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig
  polynomials and I will do either S_3 or D_8 as an example. This talk has 
 been prepared (together with Jay Taylor\, Aberdeen) as an instructional (r
 ather than a research) talk\, to be given at the forthcoming workshop "She
 aves in Representation Theory" (Isle of Skye).
