DESCRIPTION:This talk focuses on knowledge management (KM) technologies ma
 inly developed by\nthe German Research Center for AI (DFKI) and how they c
 an be used to improve\ninformation retrieval from Natural Text Resources. 
 First\, the DFKI and the\nKM-group is introduced. Next\, ontology-based in
 formation extraction (OBIE) is\nintroduced\, which has been successfully a
 pplied to electronic documents\nrecently. OBIE methods first segment the t
 ext into tokens\, then identify their\nvalues and their corresponding inst
 ances of the ontology\, and finally try to\ngenerate new facts based on th
 e text. Finally\, a successful application on the\nrecognition of handwrit
 ing is presented and prospects for other NLP-tasks are\ngiven.
